Relevant if you're in: Bio-Maths, Bio (Botany & Zoology)

Tests Biology, Physics, and Chemistry from Class 11-12. There is no alternative route to MBBS/BDS in India.

Joint Entrance Examination (Main) — National Testing Agency (NTA)

Gets you into

Admission to NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes nationwide, and the qualifying stage for JEE Advanced (IITs).

Usually two sessions, around January and April — exact dates shift every year

Relevant if you're in: Bio-Maths, Computer Science

Physics, Chemistry, Maths based. Not required for TNEA-based admission to Tamil Nadu engineering colleges.

Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) — One IIT each year, on a rotating basis

Only the top-scoring percentile of JEE Main qualifiers is eligible to register.

Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions — Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of Tamil Nadu (Anna University)

Gets you into

Counseling-based admission to B.E./B.Tech at Anna University's constituent/affiliated colleges and Annamalai University — government, government-aided, and self-financing engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu.

Usual timing

Registration soon after Class 12 results (around May-June); counseling rounds run through July-August — exact dates shift every year

How to apply

Register online and upload your Class 12 marksheet. Your rank comes directly from a score out of 200 = Maths + Physics/2 + Chemistry/2 — there is no separate entrance exam.

Relevant if you're in: Bio-Maths, Computer Science

Unlike JEE, TNEA needs no separate test — your Class 12 board marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry decide your rank directly.

Common University Entrance Test (Undergraduate) — National Testing Agency (NTA)

Gets you into

Admission to undergraduate programmes at central universities (e.g. University of Delhi, BHU, JNU) and other CUET-participating universities across India — mostly Arts, Science, Commerce, and professional courses outside Engineering/Medical.

Register online, pick the subject tests matching your intended degree, then list your preferred universities during counseling.

Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Colleges Admission — Govt. of Tamil Nadu, single-window online counseling

Gets you into

The default route into B.A./B.Sc./B.Com at Tamil Nadu GOVERNMENT arts & science colleges (affiliated to University of Madras, Bharathiar University, Bharathidasan University, etc.) — no common entrance exam needed.

Applications typically open soon after Class 12 results, around May-June

Apply online through the TNGASA portal; seats are allotted by Class 12 marks and reservation category.

This covers GOVERNMENT arts & science colleges. Private/aided colleges (e.g. Loyola, Madras Christian College) usually run their own separate merit-based admission process — check the individual college's website.

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Counseling — Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU)

Gets you into

Admission to 5-year B.A. LLB / B.Com LLB (integrated) and 3-year LLB at TNDALU's own School of Excellence in Law and its affiliated government/private law colleges across Tamil Nadu.

Usual timing

Registration soon after Class 12 (or degree) results, around May-June

How to apply

Register online with TNDALU; seats are allotted by merit rank from your qualifying-exam marks, not a separate test.

Relevant if you're in: Arts / Humanities (Geography, History, Economics & Political Science), Commerce with Computer Applications, Commerce with Business Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science, Bio-Maths, Bio (Botany & Zoology)

Important: CLAT is NOT required for Tamil Nadu government law colleges under TNDALU — merit is based directly on your Class 12 (or Bachelor's, for the 3-year LLB) marks. CLAT only matters if you're targeting a national law school outside Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Polytechnic (Diploma) Single-Window Counseling — Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of Tamil Nadu

Gets you into

Admission to 3-year engineering Diploma programmes at TN polytechnic colleges — typically taken right after 10th, as an alternative to continuing in +1/+2 first.

Registration soon after Class 10 results, around May-June

How to apply

Register online; seats are allotted by Class 10 marks and reservation category through single-window counseling.

This is a 10th-based path, separate from the +1/+2 groups this site otherwise focuses on — included for completeness since it's a real alternative some students consider instead of Bio-Maths/Computer Science.

National Aptitude Test in Architecture — Council of Architecture (CoA)

Gets you into

Admission to B.Arch (Architecture) programmes across India.

Multiple sessions, commonly around April-June — exact dates shift every year

Relevant if you're in: Bio-Maths, Computer Science

Requires 10+2 with Physics and Maths, and 50% marks — a drawing/aptitude test, not a Physics/Chemistry/Maths test like JEE.

All India Entrance Examination for Admission (Undergraduate) — National Testing Agency (NTA), on behalf of ICAR

Gets you into

Admission to B.Sc. Agriculture and allied courses at agricultural universities across India, for candidates from OUTSIDE Tamil Nadu.

Relevant if you're in: Bio (Botany & Zoology)

Tamil Nadu residents don't need this — TNAU runs its own merit-based counseling for TN students. This exam is the route for out-of-state students, or for TNAU's all-India quota seats.

Chartered Accountancy Foundation Course — Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)

Gets you into

The first of three exam stages (Foundation -> Intermediate -> Final) leading to becoming a Chartered Accountant, done alongside any Bachelor's degree.

Usual timing

Exams held twice a year, commonly May and November

How to apply

Register with ICAI after Class 12; the Foundation exam can usually be attempted after a set gap following registration.

Relevant if you're in: Commerce with Computer Applications, Commerce with Business Mathematics & Statistics

Not a college admission exam — it's a professional qualification you pursue in parallel with your degree.

National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Examination — Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

Gets you into

Admission to the National Defence Academy (Army/Navy/Air Force wings) or Indian Naval Academy — a direct route into becoming a commissioned defence forces officer, starting right after 12th.

Conducted twice a year (NDA I and NDA II) — exact dates shift every year

How to apply

Register online with UPSC; written exam followed by an SSB interview and medical test.

Relevant if you're in: Bio-Maths, Computer Science, Arts / Humanities (Geography, History, Economics & Political Science)

Age window is narrow (16.5-19.5 years) with no relaxation. Army wing accepts any 12th stream; Navy and Air Force wings require Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (PCM). Candidates must be unmarried through training.
